Prescriptions of tramadol for the treatment of headache and other types of pain have increased in recent years. Because it was not scheduled as a controlled substance by the Drug Enforcement Administration until 2014, the misconception may remain that tramadol is a safer option with less risk of dependence and adverse effects compared with other opioids.

is Depression becoming more common among U.S. teens?

The number of U.S. adolescents and young adults with untreated depression may be on the rise, a recent study suggests.

For youth ages 12 to 17, the prevalence of depression increased from 8.7 percent in 2005 to 11.3 percent in 2014, the study found. Among adults aged 18 to 25, the prevalence climbed from 8.8 percent to 9.6 percent during the study period.

An estimated 50-70 million US adults suffer from sleep or wakefulness disorders, prompting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to frame inadequate sleep as a public health epidemic.

A recent survey found that nearly 30% of adults slept 6 hours or less each night, and only 31% of high school students averaged at least 8 hours nightly.

That bodes poorly for the nation’s health, as researchers have linked poor sleep with a variety of mental and physical health problems ranging from diabetes and cancer to anxiety and depression.
